What Australian businesses are asking about mandatory sustainability reporting
What is AASB S2 and who needs to comply?
AASB S2 is Australia's mandatory climate-related financial disclosure standard. Group 1 entities (revenue $500m+, assets $1b+, or 500+ employees) must report from 1 January 2025. Group 2 entities must report from 1 July 2026. Group 3 from 1 July 2027. NGER reporters have separate obligations. If you're unsure which group applies to you, talk to us.

The transitional relief that allowed companies to defer Scope 3 reporting is a runway, not an exit. Group 2 companies reporting from July 2026 have a shorter runway than Group 1 did, and the expectation is that you use it to build the measurement capability you will need. Group 2 companies that start now will be in a materially better position than those who wait.
What is the difference between actual data and spend-based emissions estimates?
Spend-based emissions use your financial expenditure as a proxy, applying industry-average emission factors to dollar amounts. Actual data uses real consumption figures from bills, meters and suppliers. Regulators, auditors and the evolving GHG Protocol are moving away from spend-based proxies toward decision-grade actual data. Optima captures actual data.
What are the penalties for greenwashing under ASIC?
